1st Grade Math Tutor: Build Deep Number Sense & Arithmetic Mastery

Numbers 1-99, counting in groups, basic addition and subtraction, recognition of shapes, comparison (big/small, more/less), patterns, basic multiplication as repeated addition, simple time concepts, and money basics.

Yes. Grade 1 struggles are usually about confidence and attention, not ability. Small-batch live classes with up to 6 kids, visual teaching tools, and the Socratic approach (asking the child what they think before telling them) rebuild both.

By teaching the language before the math. Most 6-year-olds freeze on word problems because the English is harder than the calculation. Bhanzu trainers break down keyword patterns ("in all," "left," "each") so the operation becomes obvious.

In three steps. First: read the problem out loud. Second: figure out what it's asking. Third: pick the operation that answers it. Most word problem confusion is a language issue, not a math one, so the focus is on clarity, not computation.

By building number sense visually. When a child truly understands that 7 is 5 + 2, or that 8 is two groups of 4, fingers stop being necessary. It's not about banning fingers. It's about making mental math the easier option.

Yes. Grade 1 is where place value begins. Kids learn that a "10" isn't just a symbol. It's 10 ones grouped together. Once that clicks, two-digit arithmetic feels natural instead of confusing.

Indirectly. The curriculum covers school-relevant topics, so homework tends to get easier as understanding deepens. The Student Dashboard has session recordings and a voice-enabled doubt solver for specific questions.

Short, interactive, and visual. 50-minute sessions broken into segments: storytelling, visual problem-solving, quick gamified quizzes, and hands-on activities. Static lectures don't work at this age, and Bhanzu's format is built around that.

Every trainer holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Math, Economics, Physics, or Engineering. Only the top 2% of applicants clear our selection process, and every trainer completes 100+ hours of Bhanzu-specific methodology training before their first class.

By building the one thing competitive exams actually test: reasoning. Olympiads, SAT, board exams all reward kids who can think through unfamiliar problems. That skill starts in Grade 1, with genuine conceptual understanding instead of memorisation.

Confidence shifts in 4-6 weeks. Grade improvement follows in Month 3-6. But the earliest signal is usually your child starting to ask math questions at home. That's often visible within the first month.

Two classes per week, 50 minutes each. That's the Bhanzu format across all grade levels. Enough exposure for concepts to settle, not so much that it overwhelms a 6-year-old.

Schedule a Knowledge Check with the onboarding team. They'll assess your child's current level, match them to a batch that fits your timing, and start classes within 2-3 weeks.

Yes. Every child starts at Level 0, not their school grade. If the gap is from Kindergarten or even earlier, that's where the programme starts rebuilding. Catching up in Grade 1 is much easier than catching up in Grade 5.

Yes. Grade 1 math anxiety almost always comes from not understanding, not from lack of ability. Bhanzu's Socratic approach, combined with visual teaching and no-penalty Knowledge Checks, rebuilds confidence by rebuilding understanding. The anxiety fades as the understanding grows.
