By the end of Class 5, these should all happen in the head — no paper, no calculator. We teach the few deep principles (the 10% pivot, common-denominator inference, partition, fraction-as-division) that generate every shortcut, instead of drilling rules one at a time.

Yes, up to 15. A confident Class 5 child recalls 14 × 12 and 13 × 13 = 169 without hesitation. We don't drill blindly — the higher tables are built from the partition habit (14 × 12 = 140 + 28), so they're predictable instead of memorised.

When the problem comes in a slightly different shape ("what percentage of 240 is 60?"), the formula doesn't fit and the child freezes. Bhanzu builds percentage from the 10% pivot — once that anchor is in place, every variation becomes solvable.
Critical. Fraction understanding is the foundation of algebra (where most operations are fraction-like), of probability, of geometry (ratios), and of every quantitative subject. A Class 5 child weak in fractions becomes a Class 8 child weak in algebra.
The Level 0 diagnostic finds the real gap — often a Class 2 or 3 issue lurking beneath the Class 5 work. The first few months rebuild that foundation while pulling Class 5 content alongside it. By Month 6 to 8, most "far behind" students are on grade level. By Month 12, they're typically ahead.
Class 5 is the year where variables should be introduced — not algebra in the full Class 7+ sense, but the idea that a letter can stand for an unknown number. The Bhanzu Class 5 curriculum includes this bridge specifically because it makes Class 6 and 7 algebra feel familiar instead of foreign.
